Category Archives: For the Love of Picard
I have been pretty stubborn when it comes to talking about the upcoming election/politics in any sort of group setting. I certainly enjoying joking about these things, but actual serious conversations or debates I avoid. I will talk to Dustin, but outside of him I pretty much refuse to take part.
First of all what is one more opinion? Honestly, no one really wants to hear my opinion on Obama, Palin, the economy or WMD’s. Everyone is just waiting for their turn to speak anyway. People waste too much time imposing their views on others.
Secondly, I don’t feel educated enough to contribute in a way that would be satisfying to me or to anyone else. The worst thing to me is talking about something I don’t know enough about and should be listening instead of sharing.
Thirdly, I like harmony. There is no room for harmony in politics. When I am in a group setting it is very important to me for everyone to feel comfortable and unoffended. I feel there is little to be gained from conflict and friction. I strive to merge ideas and thoughts to find common ground and unfortunately hit a dead end when it comes to political conversations.
Fourthly and lastly, in all honesty we all vote along our party lines anyway. It doesn’t matter if their names are McCain or Obama, we choose early on without knowing much about these people who we are going to vote for and we build a case to back up this pre-made decision. I applaud anyone who can really say they don’t do this (but I will find it hard to believe).
I think Mark will know what inspired this post on this fine Tuesday morning.
In the end no one looks good.
My friend Mark blogged about recently watching “I Am Sam” and crying like a baby. The movie is ridiculously depressing, and as I said to Mark, I will say again- I hate movies and music that are purposefully depressing, it feels manipulative to me. Sean Penn may be a retard, but technically he is not mentally handicapped, but somehow you watch that movie and it makes you want to just die.
Case in point: “Christmas Shoes” by Newsong. What an over-the-top, purposefully pitiful song.
I knew girls in high school that loved to cry. They would intentionally watch something or listen to something just to cry. Either as a group of girls crying in a soggy huddle or alone in their room staring in the mirror crying and thinking “This is me crying. This is what I look like when I cry” while listening to Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.
Ok, so maybe I was the one crying and looking in the mirror, but I have grown out of that phase and I refuse to watch or listen to things that are only trying to push my cry button with fake, sad scenarios. I don’t mind true stories and I do cry when I hear horrible things on the news, and I feel no shame in that.
While I’m on it, don’t even get me started on the crying girl from American Idol.
Life has been a bit busy lately, and is only going to be even more so since this weekend we are speaking at Rez’s JR HIGH CAMP!! and then I am going to Florida (sans Dustin) for a fun girls week with 2 of my best friends. What is funny is that I am going all the way to Florida for an awesome trip but all I keep thinking about it how I will be missing out on the weekly IHOP sesh, which are totes presh.
A couple things I am excited about:
1. Cars Night in Kid’s Church. Pictures of cute kids in pimped out rides to follow.
This is my car-specially made by Kate, Dustin, Mark and Judi.
2. The possibility of swimming with a manatee in Florida.
3. My new ring from the antique store that Mark and Judi took us to on Saturday.
4. Business cards with my name on them. First ever.
5. July 30th (4 year anniversary)
6. making lists.
7. the fact that you are reading this list.
8. having 854 hits on Friday, making 12,612 hits total!!!
Things I am not excited about:
1. Having 12,612 hits on my silly blog with nothing worth while for people to read.
2. Having only 8 things on the list of things I am excited about. Lists should stop at a nice, round number like 5 or 10.
3. Being at work this morning at 6:50AM and now it is only 9:16AM and it feels like it should be noon by now.
4. The possibility of swimming with alligators in Florida.
P.S.-I just like putting “for the love of picard” in my categories. It adds a little something, I think.
update on this “vague” post: My dad (Pat Mahoney) and Pastor Hugh are finally stepping into the 21st Century and discovering that if someones name appears in any context on the internet you can find them via Google. To their surprise, the internet is the Wild West and anyone can say anything about you online. Anyone discovered the “Marilyn Hickey- Fairy Godmother of the Faith movement” website when googling Pastor Marilyn’s name? N E way… my dad and Pastor Hugh wanted to see how long it would take for someones name to be written about then found on google. So far it is has been about 2 hours and no go. What an exciting experiment! Maybe next we can all grow grass in different soils and see which grows fastest!
Sir Patrick Stewart is currently starring in Macbeth on Broadway and was being interviewed by Nicki Goslin with Newsweek, worst interview ever. Here is most of it:
Did you ever get sick of the jumpsuit on “Star Trek”?
Sick of it? I came to loathe it. We actually got rid of it after the second season thanks to my chiropractor, who said if they don’t take you out of that costume we are going to slap a lawsuit on Paramount for the lasting damage done to your spine.
How does a jumpsuit damage your spine?
They were made from Lycra and one size too small. The producers wanted to have a smooth, unwrinkled look. It put a terrible amount of strain on the shoulders, neck and back.
When you’re onstage, aren’t you worried about weird Trekkie fans in the audience?
Oh, come on, that’s just a silly thing to say.
But they are weird.
How many do you know personally? You couldn’t be more wrong. Here’s the thing: if you say the fans are weird, that means there is something essentially weird about the show, and there is nothing weird about it. I’m very passionate when people like you snigger.
Thank you, Captain Picard, for defending me against any reporter that would dare say I am “weird”. We love a great TV show, okay? Whats the big freaking deal? Get over it Nicki Goslin. You are weird. You ask stupid questions.
A pic from Patrick Stewart on Extras. Awesome.
